# Destinations Overview

Source: https://coolify.io/docs/core/networking/destinations/overview

A destination represents a Docker network on one of your servers. Selecting a destination tells Coolify which server and Docker network to use for an application, database, or service.

Each destination belongs to one server. A server can have more than one destination, and a destination can be used by multiple resources.

> **Info: Start with the default destination**
>
> Coolify creates a destination named `coolify` during installation. Applications use this destination by default. Docker Compose applications are the exception: they use their own resource-specific network unless you enable **Connect To Predefined Network**.

## What a destination controls

A destination combines three pieces of information:

| Property | Purpose |
| :----------------- | :------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Name** | Identifies the destination in the Coolify dashboard. |
| **Server** | Identifies the machine where the resource will run. |
| **Docker Network** | Identifies the Docker network the resource can join on that server. |

Resources on the same Docker network can communicate through container or service names and internal ports. Resources on separate networks remain isolated unless you connect them to a shared network.

A destination does not move traffic between servers. It also does not replace DNS, firewall, or proxy configuration. Read [Networking in Coolify](https://coolify.io/docs/core/networking-in-coolify) for the complete path between a public domain, the Coolify Proxy, Docker networks, and resource containers.

## The default destination

The default `coolify` destination represents the `coolify` Docker network on the server.

When you create a resource, Coolify first asks you to select a server. If the server has only one destination, Coolify selects it automatically. If the server has multiple destinations, you choose the Docker network for the new resource.

The default `coolify` destination cannot be deleted from the dashboard.

## When to create another destination

Most deployments only need the default `coolify` destination. Create another destination when selected applications need to use a separate Docker network instead of the default network.

Creating more destinations does not create more servers. Every destination still belongs to one connected server.

## Destination behavior for Docker Compose

Docker Compose applications and service stacks use a resource-specific Docker network by default. They do not join their selected Coolify destination automatically.

Enable **Connect To Predefined Network** when a Docker Compose resource must communicate with other resources through its Coolify destination. Review [Docker Compose networking](https://coolify.io/docs/applications/builds/docker-compose#application-networking) before enabling the setting.

> **Warning: Docker Swarm destinations are deprecated**
>
> Existing Coolify v4 Docker Swarm destinations may still appear with a **Deprecated** badge. Do not create a new Swarm deployment. Read [Docker Swarm (Deprecated)](https://coolify.io/docs/core/infrastructure/scaling/docker-swarm) when maintaining an existing deployment.

## Continue with destinations

- **[Create a Destination](https://coolify.io/docs/core/networking/destinations/create)**: Create another Docker network for deployments or scan a network that already exists on the server.
- **[Manage Destinations](https://coolify.io/docs/core/networking/destinations/manage)**: Review resources, rename a destination, choose a deployment network, or clone a resource.
- **[Delete Destination](https://coolify.io/docs/core/networking/destinations/delete)**: Review attached resources and safely remove a destination and its Docker network.
